Shubman Gill produced a breathtaking unbeaten 223 off 133 balls to power India to a record 406-run chase against West Indies, breaking multiple ODI records along the way.
There are innings that win matches. Then there are innings that change the record books.
For us at Gujarat Titans, watching our captain produce one of the most remarkable ODI knocks in recent memory was both a statement and a celebration of the batter we know so well.
The stage was set at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, where India faced West Indies in the second ODI. After winning the toss, India opted to field, only for the visitors to unleash a stunning batting display.
John Campbell’s 101 off 68 balls, Shai Hope’s 104 off 94 and Amir Jangoo’s 104 off 77 propelled West Indies to a formidable 405/7 in 50 overs.
A 406-run chase awaited India.
What followed was extraordinary.
Shubman Gill walked out to open alongside Rohit Sharma and the pair immediately set the tone for what would become a historic chase.
Rohit powered his way to a magnificent 101 off 75 balls, while our captain took the chase to another level.
Gill tore into the West Indies attack, finding boundaries with remarkable consistency and converting pressure into dominance. He went on to score his fastest ODI century in just 62 balls.

By the time he reached his double century, the night had already become one for the history books. He got there in just 117 balls to notch up the fastest double century ever scored in ODI cricket.

Gill finished unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls, guiding India to 406/2 in just 43.3 overs and sealing an eight-wicket victory.
It was India's highest successful ODI run chase and it also sealed the ODI series for India.
For us, though, the numbers tell only part of the story.
Records shattered. Series conquered 🇮🇳🔥 pic.twitter.com/HfefxMTcDl

With 604 runs after 12 innings, he also holds the record for most ODI runs by an Indian captain in his first 12 innings, alongside the fastest ODI century by an Indian captain.

Gill’s 223* rewrote the ODI record books. He became the fastest to 3,500 ODI runs in just 68 innings, while his unbeaten knock became the highest individual score in an ODI chase and by an ODI captain.
And took only 68 innings (fastest ever) to do so... ⚡️ pic.twitter.com/SCBS9ZRXI0

He also became only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score multiple ODI double centuries and the only Indian captain with a double century in both Tests and ODIs.
Gill-ty of breaking too many records 😮💨 pic.twitter.com/Y5463bR7HF

Gill’s unbeaten 223 also became the highest individual score in an ODI run chase, surpassing Glenn Maxwell’s previous mark of 201*.
The knock further placed him third on the list of the highest individual scores in men’s ODI history, behind only Rohit Sharma’s 264 and Martin Guptill’s 237.
At Gujarat Titans, we have watched Shubman Gill grow from a young talent into our captain and one of the most accomplished batters of his generation.
We have seen him embrace responsibility, raise his standards and lead from the front.
In Guwahati, he did all of that and then went a step further.
The records may belong to the history books. But for us, this is another moment to say what we have always known, our Captain Gill is built for big moments.
