Chasing a huge target of 215, skipper Gill delivered a batting masterclass with a 53-ball 104, along with Sai Sudharsan’s 58 to help us chase down the target in just 18.4 overs.

Earlier, Jason Holder and Kagiso Rabada starred with two wickets each, while Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna contributed with one scalp apiece to help us restrict the Royals to 214/6 in their 20 overs.

Here’s how the Qualifier 2 panned out at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh:

Miyan, KG struck early

DSP Siraj got us off to a great start as he dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal (1) on the fourth delivery of the opening over. Interestingly, this was Siraj’s sixth wicket in the first over of an innings in the ongoing TATA IPL, only behind Jofra Archer (7).

Rabada soon joined the party as he removed wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel (7) to reduce the Royals to 9/2 in the second over.

Jason and Prasidh led the fightback

After losing two early wickets, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ravindra Jadeja forged a partnership for the Royals. The duo added 73 runs for the third wicket, before Jadeja briefly walked off the field due to an injury concern.

Later in the 10th over, Jason provided us with a huge breakthrough as he got the better of opposition captain Riyan Parag (11).

Jason continued his brilliant spell as he then removed Dasun Shanaka (3) to change the momentum of the game.

At the other end, Prasidh also joined in as he dismissed Archer (7) to put us in a good position.

Royals posted 214

Reeling at 118/5 in the 13th over, Jadeja resumed his knock after getting some treatment. Sooryavanshi and Jadeja stitched a crucial 54-run stand to steady their innings.

While Kagiso later bagged the huge wicket of in-form Sooryavanshi (96), the Royals rode on Jadeja’s 45 not out and Donovan Ferreira’s unbeaten cameo of 38 to post 214/6 in their 20 overs.

A flawless start

Chasing 215, Sudharsan and captain Gill provided us with a blistering start. Sai Su and Gill hit Archer for four boundaries to accumulate 19 runs in the opening over.

Our stylish opening duo continued the onslaught as they pummeled the Royals’ bowlers to all parts of the ground to amass 69 runs in the first six overs.

Gill and Sai Su slammed fifties

Gill continued his captain’s knock as he then hit Tushar Deshpande for a maximum to record 150 sixes in the TATA IPL.

Meanwhile, Gill and Sai Su brought up the team’s hundred in just 8.4 overs. With their 11th 100-run partnership, our consistent opening duo shattered the record for the most century stands in men’s T20 cricket history.

Later in the over, Gill notched up his seventh fifty this season and his 33rd overall in the tournament’s history.

At the other end, Mr. Consistent Sai Su also notched up his eighth TATA IPL fifty this season, and his 20th overall in the 11th over.

Gill and Sai Su continued to pile on the runs as they established a 167-run opening stand to record the highest partnership in an IPL Playoff game for any wicket. However, the scintillating opening partnership came to an end after Sudharsan departed for 58.

Gill’s century guided us to our third IPL final

Despite losing his opening partner, captain Gill soon smashed his fastest century in the TATA IPL in the 14th over.

His 47-ball century is his fourth overall in the tournament, before our captain fell for 104 in the following over.

From that point onward, Jos Buttler (9 not out), Washington Sundar (16) and Rahul Tewatia (17 not out) chipped in with quick-fire cameos to guide us to our third TATA IPL final.
