Our Titans will now be aiming to secure the Final spot when we face either RCB or SRH in the Qualifier 1 in Dharamsala on Tuesday, May 26.
After securing our fourth Playoffs spot in five seasons, our Titans have sealed a top-two finish with an 89-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in our final league match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, May 21.
Put in to bat, Sai Sudharsan (84), captain Shubman Gill (64) and Jos Buttler (57*) slammed scintillating half-centuries to power us to 229/4 in our 20 overs.
Later, our bowlers delivered an outstanding bowling performance to help us bundle out CSK for 140 in 13.4 overs.
Rashid Khan, Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada were our standout bowlers with three wickets each.
With our ninth victory in the TATA IPL 2026, our Titans have wrapped up the league stage in the second spot with 18 points from 14 games.
Here’s how the game panned out in front of our home fans in Ahmedabad:
Gill, Sai Su lit up Gujaratno Gadh
Our in-form opening duo of captain Gill and Sudharsan got us off to a flying start. Gill hit the first boundary of the innings off Mukesh Choudhary in the opening over.
Gill then took on Spencer Johnson and mesmerised the fans with a glorious straight drive, before Sai Su joined the party with another exquisite boundary in the third over. Sai Su and Gill continued the momentum as they accumulated 15 runs off Johnson’s second over. Our opening duo brought up the team's fifty in just 5.1 overs, while Gill later reclaimed the Orange Cap after he hit the first maximum of the game. We raced to 62/0 at the end of the Powerplay.
Our opening duo notched up fifties
Skipper Gill then hit Noor Ahmad for a maximum to record 6,000 runs in his illustrious T20 career.
Gill soon brought up his sixth half-century this season and his 32nd overall in the TATA IPL.
At the other end, Sai Su hit Kamboj for a six and a four, followed by another boundary off Shivam Dube to notch up a 100-run opening stand. Interestingly, this was the 10th century stand recorded by Gill and Sai Su in men’s T20 cricket, and the joint-most century partnerships in TATA IPL history.
Later, in the 12th over, Mr. Consistent, Sai Su registered his fifth consecutive half-century, and his 19th half-century in the TATA IPL. Furthermore, Sai Su recorded the joint-most consecutive half-centuries in the tournament’s history.
However, our brilliant 125-run opening stand came to an end as our captain departed for a well-made 64.
Despite Gill’s dismissal, Sai Su and Buttler continued the onslaught as they slammed Noor for two sixes and a four to amass 22 runs in the 14th over.
Buttler’s fifty powers GT to huge total
In the final few overs, the carnage continued as Buttler and Sai Su smashed the CSK bowlers to all parts of the ground.
While we reached 200 in the 18th over, we lost Sai Su and Rahul Tewatia in the penultimate over.
Meanwhile, Jos the Boss continued the momentum with a flurry of boundaries to notch his fifty off just 23 balls.
Buttler’s unbeaten 57 propelled us to 229/4 in our 20 overs. Interestingly, this was the first instance when each of our top three recorded 50-plus scores in a TATA IPL innings.
Miyan, KG rattled CSK’s top-order
Defending 229, Siraj provided us with a perfect start as he removed Sanju Samson for a golden duck.
Siraj continued his superb spell as he then dismissed opposition captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (16) and Urvil Patel (0) to reduce CSK to 29/3 in the third over.
Kagiso soon joined in and got the better of Matthew Short (24) in the fifth over.
Rashid Khan worked his magic in the middle overs
The Titans inflicted more misery on the CSK batters after captain Gill produced a stunning run-out to send Kartik Sharma back in the pavilion.
Struggling at 63/5, Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis showed some resistance with a 53-run stand, before our spin wizard Rashid removed Dube (47), courtesy of a sensational catch by Gill, in the 11th over.
Top-two finish sealed
Our bowlers continued to pick up wickets at regular intervals as Rashid dismissed Anshul Kamboj (19) and Brevis (8) in the 13th over, while KG wrapped the CSK innings by removing Noor (1) and Johnson (0) to help us seal a top-two finish in the TATA IPL 2026.
With 638 runs in 14 games, Sai Su has reclaimed the Orange Cap, while captain Gill is placed second with 616 runs.
On the other hand, Rashid has jumped to fourth in the race for the Purple Cap with 19 scalps in 14 games, while DSP Siraj has leapfrogged to seventh in the Purple Cap race with 17 wickets in 14 matches.
