Shubman Gill has racked up 5,121 runs in 160 T20 games at an average of 37.93 and a strike rate of 138.89. He has recorded six tons and 32 fifties in his T20 career.
Shubman Gill, the Prince of Indian cricket, has made a much-awaited comeback to India’s T20I squad and has been named vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.
The Gujarat Titans skipper will be deputy to India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav as the duo will aim to guide the Men in Blue to the Asia Cup title to be held in the United Arab Emirates from September 9-28.
Gill was also the vice-captain in the previous T20I series that he played against Sri Lanka in July 2024. However, the Indian team management had not picked him in any of the following series as they prioritised his availability in Tests and ODIs.
Despite not being part of India’s T20I squads since July last year, BCCI selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar made it clear that Gill was always an integral part of the T20I setup.
“He was the vice-captain when we played in Sri Lanka. But after that, he was busy with Test cricket,” Agarkar said in a press conference.
“We obviously see some leadership qualities in him, and his form in England was what we were hoping for. He exceeded all our expectations, which is a great sign when there’s so much pressure as captain,” he added.
With Gill’s return to the vice-captaincy role, the Gujarat Titans captain is touted as a crucial figure in the Indian cricket team’s future leadership structure across all three formats.
Since making his T20 international debut against Sri Lanka in January 2023, Gill has scored 578 runs in 21 matches at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.27. He has slammed one century and three fifties in his T20I career.
Gill has further cemented his legacy as one of the prolific run-scorers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since his debut in 2018. The stylish right-handed batter has already accumulated 3,866 runs in 118 games at a strike rate of 138.72, while also maintaining a healthy average of 39.45. He has registered four hundreds and 26 half-centuries in the IPL.
Overall, Gill has racked up 5,121 runs in 160 T20s at an average of 37.93 and a strike rate of 138.89. He has recorded six tons and 32 fifties in cricket’s shortest format.
With that being said, let’s have a look at some of his memorable knocks and incredible achievements in his T20 career.
Maiden T20I ton vs New Zealand in Ahmedabad
Shubman Gill announced his arrival in the T20 international format with a scintillating century against New Zealand at our fortress, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, in February 2023.
Opening the innings, Gill slammed the Kiwi bowlers to all parts of the ground to register his maiden century in T20I format. Gill remained unbeaten on 126 off just 63 balls, laced with 12 fours and seven maximums. His magnificent knock powered India to a mammoth 234/4 in their 20 overs.
The hosts later bundled out New Zealand for 66 in 12.1 overs in the third and final T20I to clinch the three-match series 2-1. After becoming the fifth Indian to score hundreds in all three formats, Gill was adjudged the Player of the Match for his series-defining knock.
Gill’s record-breaking IPL 2023 season for the Titans
Gujarat Titans talisman took his batsmanship to astronomical heights in the 2023 edition of the IPL. Gill delivered consistent batting performances throughout the season to amass a staggering 890 runs in 17 matches at an impressive average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80.
Apart from winning the coveted Orange Cap, Gill recorded the second-highest runs in a single IPL season, only behind Virat Kohli’s 973 runs in 2016. Furthermore, Gill smashed three centuries in IPL 2023, including a blazing 129 against the Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 to register the highest individual score in an IPL Playoff game. Gill’s record-breaking IPL 2023 played a key role in guiding the Titans to back-to-back IPL finals.
Match-winning fifty against West Indies in Lauderhill
Shubman Gill produced a match-winning knock against the West Indies in the fourth T20I of a five-match series in Lauderhill in August 2023.
After India restricted the Windies to 178/8 in their 20 overs, Gill forged a sensational 165-run opening stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal to guide India to a dominant nine-wicket victory. Chasing 179, Gill and Yashasvi took the attack to the opposition as they hammered the West Indies bowlers to all parts of the ground. During their brilliant opening partnership, Gill clobbered 77 runs off just 47 balls, which included three fours and five maximums to help India chase down the target with 18 balls to spare.
Meanwhile, India rode on Gill and Yashasvi’s incredible partnership to level the five-match series 2-2.
Gill’s phenomenal 2025 season as Titans’ skipper
Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill led from the front to help the team qualify for the IPL 2025 Playoffs.
The 25-year-old continued his magnificent run with the bat as he finished as the fourth-highest run-getter in IPL 2025 with 650 runs in 15 matches at an outstanding strike rate of 155.88, while also maintaining a brilliant average of 50.
Gill emerged as one of the consistent batters throughout the IPL 2025 season with six half-centuries to his name. Additionally, Gill established a formidable opening partnership with Sai Sudharsan to provide the Titans with sensational starts.
Under Gill’s astute leadership, the Titans were one of the dominant teams in the league phase of IPL 2025, finishing third in the standings with nine wins in 14 matches.
