Shubman Gill led from the front with a century in the first innings to equal Virat Kohli’s record for most Test hundreds in a calendar year by an Indian captain (5).
Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill celebrated his maiden Test series win as India captain after registering a comprehensive seven-wicket victory against the West Indies in the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Tuesday.
With the commanding win, the Shubman Gill-led India completed a 2-0 clean sweep over the Caribbean outfit.
Having resumed their chase of 121 at 63/1 on Day 5, Titans’ star Sai Sudharsan (39) and KL Rahul (58 not out) guided the hosts to another dominant victory at home.
Earlier, Gill led from the front with a scintillating century in the first innings to equal Virat Kohli’s record for most Test hundreds in a calendar year by an Indian captain. While Gill has now scored five centuries in 2025, Kohli achieved the incredible feat twice in his career in 2017 and 2018.
Additionally, Gill now has the most centuries in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) history for India. Having brought up his 10th Test ton, Gill surpassed former India captain Rohit Sharma’s record, who recorded nine centuries.
Laced with 16 fours and two sixes, Gill remained unbeaten on 129 as India later declared their first innings after posting a mammoth 518/5.
Apart from Gill, his Titans teammate Sai Sudharsan hogged the limelight after scoring his second fifty in Test cricket. Sai Su’s magnificent 87 included 12 fours.
Previously, on Day 1, India’s flamboyant opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Su set the foundation for the hosts. The duo forged an incredible 193-run stand for the second wicket to put India in a commanding position. Jaiswal was later dismissed for 175, which featured 22 fours.
Later, India bowled out the West Indies for 248 in their first innings to enforce a follow-on. Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav was the wrecker-in-chief with 5/82, while Ravindra Jadeja picked up three scalps. Titans speedster Mohammed Siraj and his bowling partner Jasprit Bumrah chipped in with one wicket each.
In the second innings, the visitors rode on brilliant centuries from opening batter John Campbell (115) and Shai Hope (103), before they were skittled out for 390 and set up a target of 121 for the hosts.
Kuldeep and Bumrah bagged three wickets each in the second innings for India, while Siraj took two crucial wickets. Titans all-rounder Washington Sundar and Jadeja also added one scalp to their wickets tally.
After successfully chasing down 121 with seven wickets in hand, India etched their name in the history books to equal the world record for the most consecutive series wins against a single team in Tests. Since their last loss against the West Indies in 2002, India have now recorded 10 consecutive series victories over the Caribbean side.
With the win in Delhi, India now shares the record with South Africa. The Proteas also registered 10 series wins in a row against the same opposition between 1997 and 2024.
Having accumulated four victories, two losses and one draw, Shubman and his men are currently placed third in the WTC 2025-27 standings with a PCT of 61.90.
