The Indian cricket team will look to bounce back in the second Test of the newly-rechristened Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston in Birmingham, starting on July 2.

Under newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill, India started the new era on a promising note by slamming five centuries in their two innings, before they lost control of the match as England later chased down 371 in the fourth innings and took a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series.

With an aim to level the Test series, Gill and his men will need to break the Edgbaston jinx, where they have never won a Test match.

India have played eight Test matches at Edgbaston since their first appearance in 1967 under former captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.

Since then, Edgbaston has been one of India’s most challenging venues in Test history where they have registered seven defeats and one draw. India’s only draw was recorded under Kapil Dev in 1986.

The last time these two sides met at Edgbaston, England stunned India by chasing a 378-run target in the fourth innings and secured a seven-wicket win in Birmingham in 2022.

Despite succumbing to a painful defeat at Headingley, India will head into the second Test after taking plenty of positives.

Captain Gill led from the front after he slammed 147 in the first innings of the opening Test and became the fifth Indian batter to register a century on captaincy debut.

Having recorded his sixth Test century and his first outside Asia, the Gujarat Titans skipper etched his name in the history books as he joined an elite list of Indian Test captains, featuring Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Virat Kohli.

Apart from Gill, vice-captain Rishabh Pant scripted history in the first Test as he became the first Indian wicketkeeper-batter to score centuries in both innings of a Test match.

With scores of 134 and 118, Pant became the second designated wicketkeeper-batter to achieve the incredible feat after former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower.

Furthermore, opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a brilliant century (101) in the first innings, while his partner KL Rahul hit a magnificent ton (137) in the second innings.

In the bowling department, India’s bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah stole the limelight with a five-wicket haul (5/83) in the first innings.

Titans pacer Prasidh Krishna picked up five wickets in two innings, while fast bowler Mohammed Siraj chipped in with two crucial scalps in the opening Test in Leeds.

On the other hand, the England cricket team has announced an unchanged playing XI for the second Test against India.

Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith have retained their places in England’s batting lineup.

Captain Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue and Shoaib Bashir are the five genuine bowling options for the hosts.
