Shubman Gill, still early in his tenure as captain, will look to stamp his authority and guide India towards their first Test series triumph under new leadership.
The wait for the return of Test cricket is finally over. Skipper Shubman Gill will take charge of his side as they welcome the West Indies for a two-match Test series, starting October 02 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
For Indian fans, the series comes with both nostalgia and anticipation. The Caribbean outfit last toured India for a Test series seven years ago, with their most recent red-ball encounter on Indian soil taking place in October 2018. Now, the historic rivalry returns with fresh storylines and renewed purpose.
Gill, still early in his tenure as captain, will look to stamp his authority and guide India towards their first Test series triumph under new leadership.
After a memorable outing in England, the Men in Blue are determined to follow up strongly and set the tone for the new World Test Championship cycle.
The visitors, meanwhile, arrive with plenty to prove. Led by all-rounder Roston Chase with Jomel Warrican as his deputy, the West Indies are desperate to shed their inconsistency and recover from a whitewash in their own backyard against Australia earlier in July.
The Caribbean side may lack the performance of their golden generation, but they remain determined to showcase grit and resilience in the game’s longest format.
India’s 15-man squad offers a blend of youth and experience. Alongside Gill, the likes of Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel are expected to shoulder batting responsibilities.
The bowling department looks formidable, with a pace attack featuring Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Jasprit Bumrah, complemented by the spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav.
For the West Indies, batting firepower will come from Alick Athanaze, Brandon King, John Campbell, Kevlon Anderson, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Shai Hope.
Their bowling attack, spearheaded by Jayden Seales, Anderson Phillip, Justin Greaves, Jediah Blades, Jomel Warrican and Roston Chase will be tasked with challenging India’s strong batting line-up.
India and West Indies share a storied rivalry that stretches back to 1948. Across 100 Test matches, the Windies lead with 30 victories, while India have secured 23 wins, with 47 draws in between.
Most recently, the two sides met in 2023, where India clinched a 1-0 series victory in the Caribbean.
On home soil, India have been dominant in recent decades, winning five series against the visitors in 2002/03 (2-0), 2011/12 (2-0), 2013/14 (2-0) and 2018/19 (2-0).
