With 754 runs, India’s Test captain Shubman Gill was adjudged Player of the Series, while pacer Mohammed Siraj clinched the Player of the Match award at the Oval.
The Shubman Gill-led Indian cricket team sealed a dramatic six-run victory over England - their narrowest Test win in terms of runs - in the fifth and final Test to level the five-match series 2-2 in the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at the Kennington Oval in London on Monday.
With India needing four wickets to pull off a sensational series draw, while England required 35 runs on Day 5, Gujarat Titans pacer Mohammed Siraj delivered a generational performance as he finished with figures of 30.1-6-104-5 in the second innings to guide the visitors to one of their greatest wins in Test cricket history.
Apart from Siraj, his Titans teammate Prasidh Krishna produced an outstanding spell as he bagged the huge wickets of Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue to help India bowl England out for 367 in their second innings to script a historic win at the Oval.
After picking up 4/86 in the first innings, Siraj finished the Oval Test with nine scalps and was later adjudged the Player of the Match.
“When I woke up today I had the belief that I could do it, I had the belief system. I took a photo from Google which read - I can do it and put it as my wallpaper,” Siraj said at the post-match presentation.
With over 7,000 runs scored, including a record-equalling 21 individual centuries, while 175 wickets fell in the series, the first-ever Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy emerged as one of the most thrilling Test series in recent memory.
After 25 days of riveting Test cricket, here is a look at the performance of all Gujarat Titans’ players, who played significant roles in the pulsating five-match series.
Shubman Gill
Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill led from the front in his debut series as India’s Test captain. Gill delivered record-breaking performances with the bat as he finished as the leading run-getter in the series with a staggering 754 runs in five Tests at an average of 75.40, which included four hundreds. He later bagged the Player of the Series award alongside England’s Harry Brook. Apart from his batsmanship, Gill hogged the spotlight with his brilliant leadership qualities to draw the series 2-2 on English soil as a young captain.
Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj entered the Indian cricket folklore with his series-defining spell in the fourth innings of the final Test at the Oval. With England needing just 35 runs on Day 5, Siraj produced another fiery spell to guide India to a memorable series-levelling victory. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah in Birmingham and London, Siraj spearheaded India’s bowling attack with match-winning performances to register historic Test victories. Apart from delivering a whopping 1,113 deliveries, Siraj finished as the leading wicket-taker in the series with 23 scalps in five matches.
Washington Sundar
Gujarat Titans all-rounder Washington Sundar contributed with both and ball in the recently-concluded five-match series. Batting at No.5, Sundar slammed his maiden Test century (101 not out) to help India secure an epic draw at Old Trafford in Manchester to keep the series alive. The 25-year-old showcased his batting credentials throughout the series as he accumulated 284 runs in four matches at an average of 47.33, with one century and one fifty. Furthermore, Sundar chipped in with crucial scalps with his right-arm off-spin to end the series with seven wickets.
Prasidh Krishna
Gujarat Titans fast bowler Prasidh Krishna played a key role in helping India secure a 2-2 draw in England. The 29-year-old right-arm pacer showcased his importance by providing crucial breakthroughs in the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Despite featuring in three Tests at Headingley, Edgbaston and Oval, Krishna finished with the second-most wickets for India in the five-match series, only behind Siraj. Krishna claimed 14 wickets in three matches, with best figures of 4/62.
Sai Sudharsan
The first-ever Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will always be memorable for Sai Sudharsan as he made his Test debut at Headingley in Leeds. The Gujarat Titans batting talisman has already shown promise while batting at the important No.3 position and could be the perfect heir to Cheteshwar Pujara. The 23-year-old southpaw contributed 140 runs in three matches, including scoring a brilliant fifty (61) at Old Trafford in Manchester. With his technique and talent, Sudharsan will be aiming to cement his place in India’s Test playing XI.
