Sai Sudharsan etched his name in the TATA IPL records by becoming the fastest batter to reach 2,000 runs at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday.
Our Titan Sai Sudharsan delivered a batting masterclass at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium to smash a breathtaking TATA IPL century, but it wasn’t enough as we went down fighting against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a high-scoring clash on Friday, April 24.
Put in to bat, Sai Su lit up the Chinnaswamy with a sensational hundred (100 off 58), along with vital contributions from Jos Buttler (25), Washington Sundar (19 not out) and Jason Holder (23 not out) to propel us to 205/3 in our allotted overs.
Later, our bowlers fought hard till the very end by picking up wickets at crucial stages, before RCB chased down the required target in 18.5 overs.
Here’s how the game panned out against the defending champions in Bengaluru:
A blistering start
Our stylish opening duo of Sudharsan and captain Gill got us off to a brilliant start. Sai Su hit Bhuvneshwar Kumar for two scintillating boundaries in the third over.
Our swashbuckling southpaw then hit Rasikh Salam Dar for two more boundaries and followed it up by hitting Josh Hazlewood for two fours and a maximum to accumulate 14 runs in the fifth over.
At the other end, Gill joined the party as he hit Rasikh Salam to bring up the team’s fifty in just 5.3 overs.
Sai Su lit up Chinnaswamy
Sudharsan continued his outstanding knock and brought up his fifty off just 33 balls. After reaching the milestone, Sai Su took on Romario Shepherd to amass 17 runs, including a six and two fours in the eighth over.
Meanwhile, Sudharsan etched his name in the TATA IPL records by becoming the fastest batter to reach 2,000 runs. Having achieved the milestone in just 47 innings, Sai Su surpassed Chris Gayle, who needed 48 innings to reach the same landmark.
Sai Su and skipper Gill kept the momentum going as we quickly raced to 104/0 in the 10th over. Interestingly, this was our opening duo’s eighth century stand in the TATA IPL.
However, our magnificent 128-run opening stand came to an end in the 13th over as Gill fell for a well-made 32.
Sai Su’s ton propelled us to 205
Despite losing Gill, Buttler and Sudharsan continued the carnage to put the pressure back on the RCB bowlers.
Later, in the 15th over, Sai Su slammed his third TATA IPL century, this time off just 57 balls. With the brilliant ton, our dashing southpaw also became the first Indian to score a century in three consecutive TATA IPL seasons.
Looking to up the ante, Sai Su departed in the following over. His magnificent knock was laced with 11 fours and five maximums.
In the final few overs, Jos the Boss, Washi and our debutant Jason Holder chipped in with quick-fire cameos to help us post 205.
Miyan removed Bethell early
Defending 205, our bowling spearhead Mohammed Siraj provided us with an early breakthrough as he dismissed Jacob Bethell (14) in the third over, courtesy of a superb catch by Shahrukh Khan.
Rashid, Holder struck vital blows
After losing an early wicket, Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal stitched a partnership to resurrect their innings. Kohli and Padikkal added 117 runs for the second wicket.
Later, in the 13th over, Rashid provided us with a much-needed breakthrough as he cleaned up Padikkal for 55.
In the following over, Holder soon brought us right back into the game as he bagged the huge wicket of Kohli (81).
Tough result in Bengaluru
Our bowlers continued to chip away with crucial scalps as Rashid dismissed wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, while our talented left-arm spinner Manav Suthar got the better of captain Rajat Patidar (8) to reduce RCB to 173/5 in the 16th over.
However, despite best efforts from our bowlers at the death, Tim David (19 not out) and Krunal Pandya (23 not out) stitched an unbeaten 33-run stand for the hosts to guide them to a five-wicket win.
What's next for the Titans?
With six points from seven matches, our Titans will look to return to winning ways against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, April 26. Aava De, Titans!
