Our captain Shubman Gill has been appointed the new Test skipper for the Indian cricket team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday.
Having been named as India’s 37th Test captain, Gill will take over the reins from Rohit Sharma, who announced his retirement from Test cricket in May 2025.
Gill’s first assignment as India’s new Test captain will be the upcoming five-match Test series in England starting on June 20.
At 25 years and 258 days, our Titan becomes the fifth-youngest cricketer to captain India in Test cricket. He is behind Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (21 years, 77 days), Sachin Tendulkar (23 years, 169 days), Kapil Dev (24 years, 48 days), and Ravi Shastri (25 years, 229 days).
Gill has already showcased his leadership credentials, having guided the Titans to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs berth.
Under his captaincy, the Indian cricket team clinched a five-match T20I series 4-1 in Zimbabwe in July 2024. He has already been appointed as India’s vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is.
In red-ball cricket, Gill has previously led in five first-class matches, including once in the Ranji Trophy.
Since his Test debut against Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in December 2020, Gill has emerged as a key member of India’s batting department.
The stylish right-handed batter has amassed 1,893 runs in 32 matches, including five centuries and seven fifties.
Gill earlier announced his arrival in Test cricket with a match-winning 91 in the fourth innings to guide India to a famous victory over Australia at the Gabba in January 2021.
He was part of the Indian team that played the two World Test Championship (WTC) finals in 2021 and 2023.
The Gill era in Indian cricket will officially begin when they take on England in the first Test of the five-match series at the Headingley Cricket Ground from June 20.
