India have announced their squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, with Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill appointed as vice-captain. The tournament begins on September 9, with India set to face hosts United Arab Emirates in Dubai on September 10.

Gill’s inclusion brings added excitement for Indian fans, especially after his stellar performances in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The 25-year-old has a history of delivering on the big stage.

In the Asia Cup 2023, Gill was the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 302 runs in six matches, including a century and two fifties to his name. Averaging over 75 at a strike rate of 93.49, Gill proved his consistency at the top of the order.

Selectors see him not only as a run machine but also as a leader in the making.

“We obviously see some leadership qualities in him and his form in England was what we were hoping for. Gill exceeded all our expectations, which is a great sign when there’s so much pressure as captain,” said Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the BCCI selection committee, in Mumbai.

Gill last served as T20I vice-captain during the July 2024 series in Sri Lanka, before being rested from the format as India prioritised his workload in Tests and ODIs.

His return now comes on the back of a Champions Trophy triumph and a record-breaking Test series in England.

Adding to his credentials, he piled up 650 runs for Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 at an impressive strike rate of 155.87, underlining his dominance across formats.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has announced a 15-man squad for the Asia Cup 2025 to be led by captain Suryakumar Yadav.

Joining the reserves list are Gill’s Titans teammates Prasidh Krishna and Washington Sundar, alongside Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

India are placed in Group A alongside hosts UAE, arch-rivals Pakistan and Oman. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka are clubbed in Group B.

India’s Group A fixtures include UAE (September 10, Dubai), Pakistan (September 14, Dubai) and Oman (September 19, Abu Dhabi).

As per the format, the top two teams from each group will qualify for a single-group Super Four stage. The top two teams from the Super Four Stage will advance to the Asia Cup 2025 final.

Dubai International Cricket Stadium and Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium are the two venues that will host all the matches.
