Defending champions India will be aiming to etch their name in the history books as they look to become the first team to retain their T20 Cup crown against New Zealand in a blockbuster 2026 final at the world’s largest cricket stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8. The summit clash will start at 7:00 PM IST.

Under the leadership of captain Suryakumar Yadav, the Men in Blue stormed into the T20 Cup 2026 final after defeating England in a thrilling high-scoring semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.

Put in to bat, India rode on wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson’s swashbuckling 89 off just 42 balls, along with crucial contributions from Shivam Dube (43), Ishan Kishan (39), Hardik Pandya (27) and Tilak Varma (21) to post a mammoth 253/7 in their 20 overs.

Later, India’s bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-defining spell (1/33) to help the hosts restrict England to 246/7 in their allotted overs to register a nail-biting victory, despite Jacob Bethell’s valiant 48-ball 105.

Reigning champions India have been one of the dominant teams in the ongoing T20 tournament with seven victories from eight outings.

Co-hosts India started their group stage campaign with a 29-run win over the USA, and followed it up with a commanding 93-run victory against Namibia.

The Men in Blue later beat arch-rivals Pakistan by 61 runs in Colombo, and then pipped the Netherlands by 17 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to secure the top spot in Group A standings with eight points from four games.

However, India suffered their first loss of the tournament against South Africa in their opening Super 8 fixture, before they bounced back emphatically to record a comprehensive 72-run win over Zimbabwe.

They later overcame the West Indies by five wickets in a virtual quarter-final at the iconic Eden Gardens to book their spot in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, India will be marking their fourth appearance in a T20 Cup final, the most by any team in the biennial World T20 tournament. Previously, India featured in a T20 Cup final in 2007, 2014 and 2024.

Furthermore, the Men in Blue will be eyeing a record-breaking third T20 Cup title on Sunday. They currently share the record for the most men’s T20 Cup titles with the West Indies and England (two titles each). The Suryakumar-led side will also look to become the first-ever team to win the marquee T20 tournament on home soil.

On the other hand, the high-flying New Zealand side will be aiming for their maiden T20 Cup glory on Sunday.

Led by captain Mitchell Santner, the Black Caps registered a dominant nine-wicket victory against South Africa in the other semi-final to book a spot in the T20 Cup final for the second time. They earlier finished as runners-up in the 2021 edition.

With five victories and two defeats across the ongoing tournament, New Zealand have deservedly secured their place in Sunday’s summit clash.

Players to watch out for

Sanju Samson: In-form wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has entered India’s cricketing folklore with match-winning performances in their previous two games. After smashing an unbeaten 50-ball 97 against West Indies in a virtual quarter-final, Samson produced a scintillating 89-run knock off 42 balls versus England in the semi-finals to claim back-to-back Player of the Match awards. With 232 runs in four games, Samson will look to continue his red-hot form in the high-stakes final.

Jasprit Bumrah: India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been one of their biggest match-winners in the ongoing T20 tournament. The 32-year-old right-arm pacer has already picked up 10 wickets in seven games at an average of 15.90 and an impressive economy of 6.62. The Ahmedabad-born pacer could once again be key in India’s bid to defend their T20 Cup crown.
